Mozilla has started to develop the Firefox web browser for mobile devices. Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering said not to expect instant results, and that Firefox won't arrive until later, 'certainly not before 2008'.

Mozilla thinks that people have now caught up with the idea of going on the web on portal devices. So now it is time for Mozilla to enter the cycle. Mike Schroepfer believes they now are ready to bring the Firefox experience and technology to mobile devices.

"This work is happening in the Mozilla community with the full support of the Mozilla Foundation/Corporation," Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, said in an e-mail interview with InternetNews.com.

"Minimo was based on an older version of Firefox and only supported Windows mobile devices," Schroepfer said. "By using the latest version of Firefox, we can dramatically improve performance, reduce memory requirements, and support a larger number of devices.

Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering at Mozilla Corp, posted Mozilla’s intentions to his blog:

"Among the actions are to bring new people on board, who have lots of mobile browser experience, like Christian Sejersen, who was recently the head of browsers at Openwave, which has shipped over 1 billion mobile browsers - not a bad background."
