The chance to explore the myths and legends of the Lord of the Rings, learn African tribal drumming and understand the British weather is on offer as part of a new programme of weekend courses at the University of Bath on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.

The day schools are run by the Division for Lifelong Learning at the University’s Claverton Down campus and its city centre location, Carpenter House.

For fans of Tolkien who are curious about the mythological background of Middle-Earth, Looking behind JRR Tolkien's Middle-Earth: Medieval Myths and Legends will explore the Scandinavian, Germanic and Celtic sources. Students will question where the elves and dragons came from, find the origins of Gandalf’s name and find out why the Riders of Rohan speak in Anglo-Saxon.

An African drumming workshop will give the chance to learn Cassa rhythm from the Sousou tribe in a relaxed and fun setting. Even complete beginners will have mastered the basics by the end of the day.

In Understanding the British weather, students will spend the morning learning about weather systems and then make a trip to the Meteorological Station at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire to see first hand how our weather is forecast.
