Pat Metheny Returns To Orchestra Hall

Noted jazz performer Pat Metheny will bring his Pat Metheny Trio to Orchestra Hall for a single concert on Sunday, October 14, at 7 p.m. The Grammy award - winner will be joined by dynamic bassist Christian McBride and drum sensation Antonio Sanchez. Ticket prices range from $20 to $59.

Guitarist and songwriter Pat Metheny has blazed a trail in modern jazz for more than 30 years, earning a global following as both a soloist and a bandleader, and garnering 17 Grammy Awards in a record-setting nine different categories. Throughout his career, he has retained stylistic trademarks—a flexible articulation coupled with advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibilities—while applying new ideas and technology to the jazz genre.

A Missouri native, Metheny came to international attention in 1974 at the start of a three-year sting with vibraphonist Gary Burton, and one year later released his first album, Bright Size Life. In 1977 he founded the Pat Metheny Group, which has become the only ensemble in history to release eight straight Grammy-winning albums, with its most recent honor coming in 2006. He continues to record and tour extensively, performing as many as 240 concerts annually. Prior to his current tour, Metheny completed a North American circuit with pianist Brad Mehldau's jazz trio to mark the release of their joint CD, Metheny/Mehldau Quartet.

One of the world's most acclaimed bassists, Philadelphia Christian McBride leads his own group, the Christian McBride Band, and has been the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Creative Chair for Jazz since 2005. He is already a seasoned collaborator, having performed with a wide range of artists such as Ray Brown, Natalie Cole and Isaac Hayes, and participating in over 200 recordings.

Mexican drummer Antonio Sanchez has become a fixture in today's jazz scene in just under a decade as a touring musician, having worked regularly with the trios and quartets of Chick Corea and serving as the Pat Metheny Group's drummer since 2002. His first recording as a bandleader, Migration, was released this past summer and includes new tunes by Corea, Metheny and Sanchez.

The Pat Metheny Trio established its current roster in 2003. The group's current tour includes concerts in Japan, South Africa and several dozen U.S . cities. This concert is co-presented by The Dakota, Minnesota Orchestra and Northrop Jazz Season. -- www.minnesotaorchestra.org
