Bad weather caused Thai air crash

Preliminary data from black box recorders has revealed bad weather caused the crash of a budget airline in the Thai resort town of Phuket last month which killed 90 people, including one Australian.

The black box devices were sent to the United Sates where experts have analysed the data.

They have determined that sudden wind shifts, or wind shears, caused One-Two-Go flight 169 to crash upon landing at Phuket on the afternoon of September 16.

Voice recordings from the flight back up eyewitness accounts that the aircraft encountered heavy rain and wind upon approach.

The pilot had tried to abort the landing, but the tail of the plane hit the runway causing the aircraft to slide off the tarmac into an embankment. It broke in two and caught fire. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
