New Phone Technology: Just Add Water

Samsung Electro-Mechanics blew minds at Thursday's Korea Electronics Show unveiling a cell phone powered by H20, that's right, water.

The company uses a fuel cell and hydrogen which can power up small electronics like cell phones for up to ten hours.

“When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas,' explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' research center. 'The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.' Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung's needs only water."

Samsung says the devise will initially use hydrogen cartridges that have to be changed every few days. Eventually the company plans to have a model where users can pour water directly into the phone and chat to their hearts content. Gadget addicts may have to wait awhile though, the next level of water powered cell phone technology isn't expected until 2010.
