NYU's China House Announces Symposium On Buddhist Art, Oct. 17

NYU’s China House is hosting a symposium on Buddhist art, Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 at 4:00pm to 6:00pm, titled “Buddhist Art in Context”. There will be a panel discussion, followed by a question and answer session and a reception.

The speakers, internationally recognized experts in the field, will be showcasing their major exhibitions of Buddhist art this fall and next spring at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the China Institute, and the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.

Kurt Behrendt, South Asian Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Annette L. Juliano, Asian Art History, Rutgers University-Newark Campus
Chao-Hui Jenny Liu, Department of Art History, NYU
Roderick Whitfield, Department of History of Art, Yale University
Angela Zito, Departments of Anthropology and Religious Studies, NYU

The Panel will also afford a glimpse of the complexities involved in presenting Buddhist art away from its original context to the public. The speakers’ papers address recent advances in the study and presentation of Gandharan Art, Indian influences on the beginnings of Chinese Buddhist art, and the interpretation of smaller atypical Buddhist images from the ancient Chinese capital of Chang’an (modern Xi’an). -NYU
