Turkish Cabinet Seeks Approval for Iraq Incursion

Turkey's Cabinet meets Monday to prepare a motion seeking parliamentary approval for a military operation in northern Iraq to fight Kurdish rebels.

The Turkish government has been under domestic pressure to strike at Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq after a recent series of deadly rebel attacks in southeastern Turkey.

Turkish forces fired artillery into northern Iraq's Dahuk province late Saturday, but no casualties were reported.

U.S. officials have appealed for Turkey to exercise restraint and cooperate with U.S. and Iraqi forces in cracking down on Kurdish rebels. Washington fears a Turkish incursion into northern Iraq would destabilize the relatively peaceful Kurdish region.
