Cancer drugs less effective on teenagers

A Brisbane medical specialist says science has not explained why teenagers and young adults do not respond as well as expected to cancer treatments.

Doctor Peter Mollee says the subject will be explored at a major conference on the Gold Coast over the next few days.

Dr Mollee says children and adults fare better than adolescents and it is thought psychological and emotional factors may play a part.

"Attending appointments may become an issue, compliance with medication may be an issue," he said.

"So this group of patients needs extra and specific support that's really targeted to their needs rather than the things that are targeted to young children or the things that are targeted to adults." Pravda.ru
