
The Turkish military has stepped up attacks and has shelled areas in Northern Iraq and has assembled 60,000 troops along the Iraq border.
Civilians in northern Iraq border town of Zakhu have fled after shells slammed into their homes and farms during a day-long bombardment that caused major damage but no casualties, Kurdistan regional government spokesman Jamal Abdullah told AFP.
"From this morning until early evening there was a Turkish attack on villagers near Zakhu," Abdullah said. "There were no casualties but lots of damage and many families fled to safer areas."
On Saturday the Turkish military fired 7 to 8 shells in a village in northern Iraq. Witnesses have said the shells landed in Nezdoor village, no casualties were reported.
"The Iraqi government calls on the Turkish government to pursue a diplomatic solution and not a military solution to solve the [problem] of terrorist attacks which our dear neighbour Turkey has witnessed from the PKK," Ali al-Dabbagh said.
Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said the Turkish government hoped it would not be forced to resort to military attacks, even if its consensus gained approval in parliament.
