IVF report recommends single embryo implants

Posted October 16th, 2007 by Dinka

A report about IVF has found more babies are being born to women who have one embryo implanted and that those babies are healthier than other IVF babies.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released its latest report about fertility called "Assisted Reproduction Technology in Australia and New Zealand".

The report found single embryo transfers accounted for about 48 per cent of all embryo transfers in 2005 compared to 28 per cent in 2002.

The report says that in 2005, 86 per cent of deliveries resulted in one, rather than multiple IVF babies being born, the highest proportion ever recorded.

The report also says babies born as a result of a single embryo transfer are healthier than those babies whose mothers had a double embryo transfer.

It says the babies have a higher birth-weight, fewer are born prematurely and the prenatal death rate is also lower. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
