LA Philharmonic Presents Youth Orchestra Festival

The Los Angeles Philharmonic hosts some of the world's finest youth orchestras for an unprecedented International Youth Orchestra Festival that showcases outstanding ensembles from Finland, Venezuela and Switzerland, capped by a full day of free performances by Los Angeles-area youth orchestras.

Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the orchestra from his alma mater, the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic's Music Director Designate Gustavo Dudamel conducts his Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra (SBYOV) of Venezuela, and Charles Dutoit, newly appointed Chief Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducts the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra.

In addition to performances by these three orchestra, the International Youth Orchestra Festival includes community concerts that feature performances by small ensembles from the SBYOV, as well as by students from Finland and Los Angeles' Colburn School performing side by side; in-school appearances by visiting South American student musicians that bring new perspectives to local LA Philharmonic Partner School students; and Esa-Pekka Salonen joins Jorma Panula, his mentor/teacher and internationally revered trainer of young conductors, to lead a master class for young conductors at the Colburn School.

A day-long symposium on October 29 examines models of music education from around the world, with participants from many countries, including Jose Antonio Abreu, the visionary educator and founder of Venezuela's pioneering music program, El Sistema. The International Youth Orchestra Festival ends on November 11 with a full day of free performances by Los Angeles-area youth orchestras making their debut performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Deborah Borda, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assocation, says, "We talk about music as a universal language, but there are nuances to understand and learn. During this festival, international and local young musicians have the opportunity to rehearse, perform and learn together, sharing their cross-cultural experiences of music-making. Angelenos have the opportunity to experience this rich musical exchange in performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall and community sites throughout Los Angeles. The Festival is a wonderful way to foster musical relationships among tomorrow's artists, as well as to bring the musical experience beyond the concert hall and further into the community."

The International Youth Orchestra Festival is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's larger Young Musicians Initiative, which is comprised of a number of innovative music education programs that address the specific artistic needs of young musicians in Los Angeles County. The Young Musicians Initiative represents the overall educational direction and objectives of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, reflecting its core values and continuing its tradition to nurture the work of emerging and established instrumentalists, conductors, and composers. -- www.laphil.com
