The Akron Symphony chorus begins its next fifty years with a concert on Sunday, October 28 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Akron at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Hugh Floyd (Oberlin College Conservatory of Music) will direct the 120 plus member chorus in a program featuring Fauré’s masterpiece—Requiem.
The group will also perform three traditional spirituals: Wade in the Water; My Lord What a Mornin; and Soon Ah Will Be Done and will open the concert with Handel’s Coronation Anthem No. 1, Zadok the Priest.
The chorus, which celebrated its 50th anniversary season last April, is showing no signs of slowing down. The group is scheduled to perform on four of the Akron Symphony Orchestra’s concerts throughout the 2007-2008 season—in addition to the October 28 stand-alone concert, a long held tradition for the all volunteer chorus.
Dr. Hugh Floyd has signed on to help the chorus fulfill its obligations while the search continues for a permanent chorus director. Dr. Floyd is currently the Director of Choral Activities at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and at the Interlochen Arts Camp. He has worked with many orchestras and their respective choruses, including serving as assistant conductor of the Charlotte Symphony and chorus master for the Grand Rapids Symphony. -- www.akronsymphony.org
