Oprah Comes Out About Thyroid Condition

Oprah Winfrey brought her thyroid condition into the public eye Tuesday on her talk show and in the October 2007 issue of her magazine, raising further awareness on the disease.

While wrapping up her 21st season in May, Oprah reported that she had begun to put on weight and felt lethargic.

Going from doctor to doctor, while in Africa, says Oprah, “I tried to figure out what was wrong and finally figured out that I had literally sort of blew out my thyroid.”

"My body was turning on me," says Oprah in her magazine's new issue. "First hyperthyroidism, which sped up my metabolism and left me unable to sleep for days. (Most people lose weight. I didn't.)"

After news of her condition hit, reports the Associated Press, Winfrey took a month long vacation to Hawaii to regain her health. She discussed her condition of Tuesdays show with Dr. Christiane Northrup, author of "The Wisdom of Menopause," who is also featured in Oprah's October magazine.

Oprah said she "wanted so many other women who are going through the same thing to check on yourself and recognize that ... it's an issue we all share in common."

An estimated 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, and more than half are undiagnosed. Women are at the greatest risk for developing thyroid problems -- seven times more often likely men.
