A planned lecture in London by a Nobel laureate has been cancelled amid a race row. One of the world's most eminent scientists, Dr James Watson, who helped discover the structure of DNA, sparked controversy after claiming in a recent interview that black people are less intelligent than whites.

Dr Watson is quoted as saying he was inherently gloomy about the prospect for Africa because he says, "All our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours, whereas all the testing says not really".

Dr Watson went on to say he hoped everyone was equal, but that people who have to deal with black employees found this was not true.

These particular comments have proved too much for Britain's Science Museum.

A spokesman said that while eminent scientists can sometimes say things that cause controversy, Dr Watson's recent comments went beyond the point of acceptable debate. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
