Casanova Gets A Makeover At Everyman Theatre

Prepare to see the legend of Casanova as you never have before! Carol Ann Duffy's new version of the tale of the original Italian stallion recasts the Latin lothario as a woman in Told by an Idiot's scandalously passionate new play for the company's first visit to Liverpool. Casanova runs from Tuesday 30 October to Saturday 3 November at the Playhouse.

The year is 1755 and Casanova, having fled from prison, is voyaging across Europe, delighting and inspiring all she meets. In Flanders, bakers' bread rises without yeast; in Padua, a Church service is interrupted as the entire female congregation goes into labour; whilst in Cirencester, several magistrates are seen cavorting naked on St Swithins Day. But all the while, a dark and mysterious figure pursues our heroine, growing ever nearer with every step…

Carol Ann Duffy is one of the UK's most celebrated poets with a strong link to the Playhouse having written a poem to celebrate the reopening of the Playhouse in 2000. Casanova continues her strong tradition of reinventing male figures as females, including in her best-selling collection The World's Wife and her celebration of the female condition Feminine Gospels. She won the 1993 Whitbread Award for Poetry, was awarded an OBE in 1995, a CBE in 2001 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1999.

Performed by an international cast of actors, Casanova will be played by Hayley Carmichael, with direction by fellow Told by an Idiot co-founder Paul Hunter. Formed in 1992, Told by an Idiot have been creating inventive and beguiling comedy ever since. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
