Hotel Cassiopeia by Charles L. Mee, a premiere from the 2006 Humana Festival of New American Plays, Actors Theatre of Louisville's internationally celebrated showcase of new stage work. The play is part of the highly regarded Next Wave Festival at Brooklyn Academy of Music, which features some of the world's most innovative artists working in music, theater and dance.
Hotel Cassiopeia, commissioned by Actors, explores collage artist Joseph Cornell's life, art and way of seeing. Mee created the piece in collaboration with Anne Bogart and the SITI company. It is one of a quartet of plays that Mee is writing about American artists. The first of these, bobrauschenbergamerica, also premiered at Actors in the 2001 Humana Festival and later at the 2003 Next Wave Festival.
Produced each March, the Humana Festival, underwritten by The Humana Foundation, is a well-known breeding ground for new plays by emerging and established writers. During its 31-year history, over 300 plays have premiered in the festival. Three Pulitzer Prize dramas have originated in the festival and over 225 of the festival plays are now published making them a part of the permanent cannon of American dramatic literature.
The festival's annual audience of nearly 25,000 is comprised of local patrons as well as theatre lovers from across the nation and around the world.
The 2008 Humana Festival is slated for February 24 – March 30. -- www.actorstheatre.org
