Dorothy Joins The Wizard Of Oz At Mayflower Theatre

Lydia Griffiths has been announced to play Dorothy Gale in the Mayflower Theatre's Christmas production of The Wizard of Oz. She will join a star studded cast of Russ Abbot, Gregor Fisher, Matthew Kelly, and Gary Wilmot at The Mayflower, Southampton this December (7 December – 19 January).

Lydia has performed in a variety of musicals both in the West End and on tour, including Les Misérables and appeared at Chichester Festival Theatre in Carousel last year. She started out on her career by winning the second series of ITV's Big Big Talent Show, and a call to perform at The Royal Variety show followed shortly after. She is thrilled to be playing the role, "When I found out I got the role of Dorothy I was over the moon. Wizard of Oz was the first movie my Mum bought me when I was growing up and I used to sit for hours and sing along with those beautiful songs. It's an iconic role which I'm looking forward to portraying although I'm breaking the two main rules of acting...never work with animals or munchkins!".

Join Dorothy and her new friends, the Scarecrow (Gary Wilmot), Tin Man (Russ Abbot) and Cowardly Lion (Gregor Fisher) on the road to Oz as they endeavor to keep her ruby slippers away from the evil Wicked Witch of the West (Matthew Kelly).

The production also stars Marilyn Cutts as Aunt Em/Glinda, Iain Stuart Robertson as Uncle Henry/Guard and Brian Greene as Professor Marvel/Wizard of Oz.

The Mayflower has again teamed up with Michael Rose and Chris Moreno, the producers of Irving Berlin's White Christmas, last year's hit Mayflower Christmas show to present a delightful star studded classic for all the family this year.

This new lavish production is the RSC version of the musical by John Kane based on the MGM movie of 1939. With a cast of 20 and orchestra featuring the classic numbers, We're off to see the Wizard, Follow the Yellow Brick Road and of course Over the Rainbow The Wizard of Oz will ensure audiences in the south will certainly be taken over the rainbow to a place far, far away. -- www.the-mayflower.com
