The latest installment in a wave of American Idol Spin offs -- The Next Great American Band -- premieres tonight on Fox, continuing the popular Idol franchise but with bands this time instead of solo singers.

Like American Idol, a pair of somewhat known judges from the music industry -- Sheila E. and Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls -- are paired with a quick witted, mean spirited, foreigner that everyone loves to hate. For “Band,” America's next adversary hopeful is Ian “Dicko” Dickson, before featured on Idol's Australian spin off.

Also reminiscent of Idol, the show is rumored to host what MTV News called a “parade of wacky bands,” ranging in genre from polka to hip hop, and viewers will choose, via phone voting, the ultimate winner.

The Next Great American Band will feature a new themed episode each week which semi-finalists are asked to practice then perform in front of the live studio audience. In the first week, bands will perform songs based on music legend Bob Dylan.

The judges waded through 14,000 audition submissions then watched 60 finalists perform during two days in August. Twelve bands, have been plucked from the sea of fame seekers, set to compete for a recording contract at the shows finale.

The Next Great American Band premiers tonight at 8 pm on Fox 11.

The Next Great American Band/Northmont

That was awful of the judges, I live no where close to Northmont, have never even heard of them, just so that you all know I'm not a friend or have any kind of bias for them. For the judges to crucify them, the way they did, that was bad. Sorry Johnnie they sounded better than your Goo Goo Dolls, couldn't take it could you, and I can only guess that's why you had your stupid little song play while they left. Well, I hope you all feel like idiots when they get signed and make it bigger than the Goo Goo Dolls!
