Italy bans anorexia advertising

Italy's advertising watchdog has banned a controversial advertising campaign showing a naked anorexic young woman.

The posters were displayed in response to growing complaints that the fashion industry promotes excessive dieting.

The advertising authority said the poster offended against its code, which demands respect for human dignity.

The controversial advert was shot by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, the man behind hard-hitting and equally controversial campaigns by the Benetton group, and featured the slogan "No to anorexia". © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
