New York City police broke down the door of Chamber's high rise Manhattan apartment yesterday, after an investigation stemming from neighbor complaints, pinned him for selling cocaine to undercover officers.
Also charged is Chamber's long time companion Shawn Kovell, 39, who waited for him during his 15 year prison stint following the death of Jennifer Levin.
Chambers, 41, plead guilty to manslaughter in the 1986 case that helped coin his alias, the “preppy killer,” saying he had accidentally choked Levin to death in Central Park while having rough sex.
Over half a pound of cocaine was found in the East 57th Street apartment -- $20,000 worth – lived in by the couple. The two are charged with the felony sale of narcotics and, holding more than two ounces, first-degree criminal sale a controlled substance.
Since his release in 2003, Chamber's record was further blemished by a slew of unpaid traffic tickets coupled with a 100 day jail sentence in 2005 after police found heroin in his vehicle.
Chambers, 41, if convicted, is likely to spend another 24 years in prison. Assistant District Attorney Dan Rather predicted a longer sentence in the New York Post, saying Chambers could be looking at up to 150 years.
Robert Chambers
Are we really surprised here? He was a loser going in to prison, he certainly isn't going to emerge as anything else. Robert Chambers DID get a life sentence....of being Robert Chambers. who, by the way, belongs in jail.
