Bush cites Iran in missile defence row

US President George W Bush says a missile defence system in Europe is urgent because Iran could be working on weapons capable of striking the United States.

Mr Bush says US intelligence agencies believe Iran could develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States before 2015 and steps must be taken to stop this happening.

"The need for missile defence in Europe is real and I believe it's urgent," he said.

The US wants to base the missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Russia opposes the move, insisting the US is over-stating the threat posed by Iran and should instead be more worried about a possible attack from North Korea. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
