AC Milan has stayed on course to qualify for the Champions League last 16 with a resounding 4-1 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk, while Liverpool's hopes of advancing stuttered with a 2-1 defeat at Besiktas.

Two goals apiece from Alberto Gilardino and Clarence Seedorf lifted holders Milan to the top of Group D, level on six points from three matches with Shakhtar, whose Italian striker Cristiano Lucarelli scored a consolation.

Celtic has three points following a 1-0 reverse away to Benfica.

Last season's losing finalist Liverpool is staring at elimination after the loss in Istanbul left it bottom of Group A with only one point from three games.

"The first thing is start to think about the next game, try to win that one," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "I think Liverpool can qualify with seven points."

A Sami Hyypia own goal fired the Turkish side ahead in the 13th minute and Bobo made it 2-0 in the 82nd before Steven Gerrard pulled one back with a diving header.

Olympique Marseille stayed in pole position in Group A on seven points after a 1-1 home draw with Porto, who has five points while Besiktas has three and a chance to secure at least a UEFA Cup berth.

Real Madrid also stayed firmly in the driving seat with a 4-2 success against 10-man Olympiakos Piraeus in a highly entertaining Group C clash at the Bernabeu.

Raul gave the home side an early lead but Luciano Galletti equalised shortly afterwards before Vassilis Torosidis was sent off in the 13th minute for a professional foul on Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Defender Julio Cesar stunned the home fans when he scored against his former club to give the Greek side a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute but two goals from Robinho and another by Javier Balboa turned the match after Van Nistelrooy missed a penalty.

The result left Real leading Group C on seven points. Olympiakos has four while Werder Bremen is on three after a 2-1 home win over Lazio, which is bottom with two points from its opening three games.

Goals from Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba either side of half-time handed Chelsea a 2-0 home win over Schalke 04 to leave it top of Group B on seven points, ahead of Rosenborg who has four after a 2-0 home defeat of Valencia.

Schalke and Valencia are level on three points.

Malouda put Chelsea ahead in the fourth minute with a fine solo effort after a good pass from Drogba, who sealed the match shortly after the break with an unstoppable header. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
