Oprah School Hits Scandal

The Leadership Academy for Girls, one of Oprah Winfrey's latest pet projects, was back in the spotlight this week, with the schools dorm matron accused of abusing and sexually assaulting students.

A local South African newspaper, the Rapport, said the matron was accused of fondling one student and assaulted another – allegedly grabbing her by the neck and slamming her against a wall.

The accused matron has taken a paid leave of absence while the investigations continue. Police are still, at this time, taking statements from victims and school employees.

"We have engaged professional investigators of the highest standing from South Africa and the United States to conduct a fair and impartial inquiry into these claims," said school CEO, John Samuel.

Winfrey handpicked the 152 grade 7 and 8 underprivileged pupils who call her “Mama Oprah,” and put $40m into the Academy since its opening in January. She flew to South Africa on Oct. 19 to check the investigations progress..
"Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy," she said. "I will do everything within my power to ensure their safety and well-being."
