'Triumph Of Marriage' Exhibited At Boston Museum

"The Triumph of Marriage: Art for the Renaissance Home" exhibition will be on view at Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum from October 16, 2008 to January 18, 2009.

Then traveling to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota: February 14 – May 17, 2009 Renaissance domestic pictures on cassoni (wedding chests) drew upon ancient, medieval, and contemporary sources.

Their imagery often reflects the triumphant celebration of marriage, the event for which the pictures were made, and which they continued to commemorate while on display in the home. The Triumph of Marriage will showcase the unfamiliar artistry of elaborately decorated cassoni, and will explore themes such as the social roles of brides and grooms, the patronage of domestic art, the interest in literary texts as examples for marriage.

The Triumph of Marriage: Art for the Renaissance Home is curated by Alan Chong, Curator of the Collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. -- www.gardnermuseum.org
