
Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté was awarded a Gemini for Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program or Series for his role in the documentary Moving To His Music: The Two Muses of Guillaume Côté. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced the Gemini Award last night at the Drama, Variety and Comedy Gala in Regina.
Moving To His Music: The Two Muses of Guillaume Côté documents Mr. Côté's creative partnership as both a dancer and composer with choreographer Roberto Campanella. The documentary was produced by Artec Media II Inc. and directed by Yosif Feyginberg, who was also nominated for a Gemini in the Best Direction in a Performing Arts Program or Series category.
Guillaume Côté was the youngest dancer in the history of The National Ballet of Canada, at the age of 19, to dance the lead role of Siegfried in Swan Lake. Other lead roles include Prince Florimund in The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Albrecht in Giselle, Prince Ivan in The Firebird, Peter/The Nutcracker in The Nutcracker, Solor in La Bayadère, James in La Sylphide, the male lead in Jerome Robbins' Opus 19 / The Dreamer, the title role in Apollo and the Poet in Les Sylphides.
Mr. Côté is in demand as a guest artist around the world. He has performed with American Ballet Theatre, South African Ballet Theatre and has danced in Argentina at the Teatro Colón with ABT Principal Dancer Paloma Herrera. In 2006, Mr. Côté made his debut with American Ballet Theatre, dancing the role of Prince Charming in Cinderella, and appeared in the Roberto Bolle and Friends Gala in Italy.
Mr. Côté will dance in the company premiere of West Side Story Suite, November 8 –18, and in The Merry Widow, November 21 – 25. -- www.national.ballet.ca
