Car Bomb Kills At Least 16 in Iraq

Iraqi officials say a car bomb has exploded in a market in the southern city of Kufa, killing at least 16 people and wounding 25 others.

The explosion took place Saturday just hours after former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed in Baghdad.

Kufa is one of the holiest cities in Iraq for the country's majority Shi'ite Muslims.

A U.S. Defense Department spokesman says American forces in Iraq are on a high state of alert, anticipating a possible increase in violence triggered by the former dictator's execution.

U.S military officials also announced the death of one American soldier who was killed Friday while patrolling a neighborhood in northwestern Baghdad.
