An extraordinary opportunity for young singers to take advantage of the resources of The Santa Fe Opera has been announced by Kirt Pavitt who is serving as director of a new program entitled Young Voices at The Santa Fe Opera.
As a company with an international reputation for developing young singers, the program is designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who may be considering a career in music, or simply wish to know more about the art of singing.
“The Opera has many wonderful education programs for students,” observed Pavitt, “and our Young Voices will continue this tradition. We want to enroll students with a demonstrated interest and love for singing and take them to the next level. We hope to help them meet the challenges of communicating through performing utilizing the talents of our excellent artistic staff.”
Program highlights include alternate weekly voice lessons and music coachings with two distinguished members of The Santa Fe Opera music staff, Robert Tweten and Kirt Pavitt, as well as noted singer and director Kathleen Clawson. Additional training and mentoring will be provided by other Santa Fe Opera artists.
The program begins in January and continues through May 2008. At the end of the session, there will be a public performance to showcase the young singers, giving each the experience of singing before a live audience. Participants will also be given an opportunity to attend area cultural activities such as the Met at the Movies, Opera Southwest performances, symphony and chamber music concerts.
Auditions for this new program will be held in Albuquerque on November 17, 2007 at The University of New Mexico from 10:00 AM until noon in Keller Hall, and from 1:00 PM until 4:00 in Room 2101 in the UNM Fine Arts Building. Santa Fe auditions will be held November 18 at The Santa Fe Opera in the Ranch Lounge from 10:00 AM until noon and 1:00 PM until 4:00. Students must come prepared with two selections from folk songs, art songs, spirituals, opera arias or American musical theater. A pianist will be provided. The Opera requests a written recommendation from the student’s school music instructor or private teacher. - www.santafeopera.org
