At the official reception for Merkel, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged Germany to play a bigger international role. Calling the chancellor a great leader and friend of India, he said a globalized world of mutual dependencies needed German leadership. Merkel urged German business and industry to seize opportunitieis to boost trade with India.
Speaking to the German radio station RBB-Inforadio, the head of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce said Germany was looking for a head start in the fast emerging market of 1.1 billion people.
"We Germans are not the only ones. If we are here today, tomorrow there will be the Americans, and after that the French. We have to show that we are engaged, that we are serious," Bernhard Steinruecke said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was very keen to push for big business with India during a state visit with purpose to invigorating trade and security links between Europe's largest economy and the Asian giant moving within close to double digit economy from last four years.
