Vacation Week Fun At The Berkshire Museum

The Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield will offer a host of family programs during December vacation week. The Museum's Festival of Trees By the Sea is open every day except Christmas Day.

On Saturday, December 30, at 11 a.m., the Gallery Discovery Program "Celebrity Sea Creatures" will take place in the aquarium. Visitors may drop by to learn about clownfish, blue tangs, and other creatures that inspired characters in movies like Finding Nemo or cartoons like Spongebob Squarepants. The program is free with Festival admission.

On Sunday, December 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m, the Berkshire Museum will celebrate New Year's Eve with the "Buccaneers Ball." Kids are encouraged to come in costume--pirates, mermaids, fish, etc.--for this annual family party. At 11 a.m. Caribbean for Kids will perform steel drum music and sing-along songs. Then partygoers will countdown to noon to ring in the New Year and join a conga line to the Crane Room for refreshments. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages 3 to 18 ($5/$3 for members).

Throughout the week, a free family "Treasure Map" will be available. The map will give clues to answer questions and hunt for different "treasures" among the Festival displays.

Festival of Trees By the Sea is on view at the Berkshire Museum through December 31. Some 200 decorated trees fill the galleries. Tree decorators-local businesses, organizations, and school children-have created trees inspired by the theme, from seaside resorts to pirates, from lobsters to mermaids. Nautical art, historical artifacts, and natural science specimens relating to the sea are also on view, drawn from the Berkshire Museum's extensive collection. Highlights include a walk-in coral reef replica complete with coral specimens and a life-size model shark, and the "Maritime Legends Hall of Fame," featuring real and fictional artifacts relating to pirates and other seafaring figures.
