The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will present the revolutionary Eddie Daniels, WSU Artist-in-Residence, at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 9 at Orchestra Hall. He will be performing as soloist with the Wayne State University Chamber Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Jazz Big Band. The concert will feature premieres of various works, including Patrick Williams' Concerto in Swing for Big Band.
Eddie Daniels, a clarinet legend and a true renaissance musician, revolutionized the blending of classical and jazz. Equally at home in both, his breathtaking virtuosity has won Daniels numerous GRAMMY awards and nominations. Daniels first garnered attention as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, but eventually returned to his first love, the clarinet. "It is a rare event in jazz where one man can all but reinvent an instrument bringing it to a new stage of revolution," states eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather. Eddie began his musical studies at the age of 13 and received his Masters in Clarinet from Julliard.
The November 9 concert at Orchestra Hall will also highlight Daniels' classical side with performances with the WSU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Douglas Bianchi and the WSU Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Kypros Markou. "Eddie Daniels combines elegance and virtuosity in a way that makes me remember Arthur Rubenstein. He is a thoroughly well-bred demon," said Leonard Bernstein of Eddie's classical clarinet.
The premiere of Concerto in Swing, a piece written for Daniels by Patrick Williams, will feature Daniels as soloist with the WSU Big Band under the direction of Christopher Collins. The Big Band has also performed on the DSO Jazz Club Series with Joe Lovano and at the Detroit International Jazz Festival with headlining artists Kurt Elling and Diane Schuur.
TICKETS for the Artistry of Eddie Daniels range in price from $18 to $25, with a limited number of boxes at $40. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
