November brings falling leaves, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and a new season of Detroit Symphony Orchestra "Civic Experience" concerts. These Sunday evening events showcase the DSO's Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE) in a music festival atmosphere in which classical and jazz ensembles perform in multiple venues at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
A single ticket provides access to three different concerts and the opportunity for interested students and their families to learn about the study and performance options offered by the Civic Youth Ensemble program. The first Civic Experience events of the 2007-08 season take place on Sunday, November 4 and Sunday, November 11, each beginning at 6 p.m. at The Max. Patrons are free to wander between stages to hear all of the ensembles, and a variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase in the atrium lobby. Portions of the Civic Experience concerts are presented by the Handleman Company and the Ford Motor Company Fund.
The Civic Youth Ensemble program offers one of the nation's most comprehensive pre-professional training program for orchestra, chamber, wind and jazz musicians of all ability levels, from elementary school to college graduate students. Comprised of nearly 500 students between the ages of 8 and 22 from across Southeast Michigan, the 2007-08 season features three symphony orchestras (beginning, intermediate and advanced); the Civic Academy comprised of three entry-level string ensembles; a Chamber Music Program that provides more diverse training and performance experience; the Civic Wind Ensemble for advanced woodwind, brass and percussion students; and three jazz ensembles (intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced).
Auditions for the CYE take place each spring and an audition guide and application is available online at www.detroitsymphony.com. Students rehearse weekly at the Jacob Bernard Pincus Music Education Center at The Max with the CYE conducting staff and Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians, and enjoy rare opportunities to study and perform with top classical and jazz artists appearing on the DSO's classical and jazz concert series. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
