Dolby Laboratories, Inc. announced that the first mobile phone with Dolby® Mobile technology, an audio processing technology platform designed to enable high performance playback of entertainment on mobile phones, will be the FOMA SH905i Sharp handset from NTT DoCoMo.

Dolby Mobile, designed to dramatically improve listening enjoyment, is a set of digital audio processing features built on Dolby's extensive portfolio of technologies that have been optimized for on-the-go applications. Dolby Mobile includes:

Sound Space Expander, a sound stage enhancer, which produces a wide stereo image and improves the separation of instruments without diminishing the center of the mix
Sound Space for Headphones, a sound stage enhancer for stereo headphones, which eliminates "inside the head" and listener fatigue effects
Natural Bass, a bass enhancement system, which provides up to an octave of downward extension in the base response of most speakers
Sound Level Controller, a peak limiter and expander, which makes it possible to listen to audio sources that have a large dynamic range without having to make continual volume adjustments
Mono-to-Stereo Creator, a mono-to-stereo audio converter, which converts mono sources to stereo, thus making it possible to use the other features to enhance the audio

At the end of November, NTT DoCoMo and Sharp will offer the FOMA SH905i, the first phone with Dolby Mobile technology, to customers in Japan. NTT DoCoMo and Sharp will offer an additional phone with Dolby Mobile technology, the FOMA SH905itv, to customers in Japan in the January-February 2008 time frame. Both phones will integrate Dolby Mobile technology to deliver more vivid and engaging sound from mobile entertainment content and will support multiple NTT DoCoMo mobile services including OneSeg, Music, SD Audio, Music Channel, i-Motion, and Internet Movie Player.

"We're honored to be working with two of the most visionary and innovative mobile companies in the world to expand the possibilities of entertainment on the move," said Max Taylor, Director, Dolby Mobile Business. "Dolby Mobile delivers outstanding sound for music, movie, television, and game content, and we're confident people who purchase the Sharp 905i will be amazed by the experience this phone delivers."

Dolby Laboratories will also make Dolby Mobile technology available to NTT DoCoMo and Sharp for use in future products and services for Japan. To support its partners in the mobile industry, Dolby has formed a dedicated mobile group.
