The peerless English Touring Theatre make their first ever visit to Liverpool next month with a stunning new production of The Changeling, Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s classic Jacobean revenge drama. Often considered to be the greatest tragedy in English drama after Shakespeare, The Changeling arrives at the Playhouse from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 November.
Beatrice Joanna is worshipped from afar by the wretched De Flores. He will do anything for her. Anything at all. Even dispose of her unwanted bridegroom. But the untouchable heiress has made one mistake, de Flores fee is not gold, but the beautiful Beatrice Joanna herself. Initially repulsed, her desire is ignited and their torrid alliance propels them on a depraved journey of lust, lunacy and murder.
A bloodthirsty masterpiece, The Changeling is a dramatic and disturbing look at the dark side of desire and the conflict of family duty. Fusing sex and violence with the tragic and grotesque, this startling play retains the ability to shock and delight in equal measure.
English Touring Theatre are one of this country’s most well-respected companies, with a 15-year track record in creating seminal productions of classic drama. The Changeling marks the final production under the stewardship of founding Artistic Director Stephen Unwin who, in addition to this, has previously directed King Lear with Timothy West, and Hamlet with both Alan Cumming and Ed Stoppard for the company.
The Changeling brings together a hugely experienced cast together and features Adrian Schiller (Royal Shakespeare Company) as the depraved De Flores alongside RADA-graduate Anna Koval as Beatrice-Joanna. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
