Amid the mounting international pressure to conduct elections at the earliest, Pak Attorney General Malik Qayyum has said that general elections in Pakistan are likely to be held in February and Emergency could be lifted as early as within a month.
National and provincial assemblies will be dissolved on 15th November when their term ends and polls are likely to be held within 90 days after that, the top government lawyer said.
This was "almost finalised" at a high-level meeting chaired by President Pervez Musharraf last evening, Qayyum told a news channel.
Besides the Attorney General, the meeting was attended by chief of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Shujaat Hussein and other top government functionaries.
Qayyum also said that Emergency, imposed by Musharraf on 3rd November, is likely to be lifted in a "minimum period of one month to a maximum of two months" depending on the improvement in situations and talks with media to evolve a broadcasting regulation code.
He also said an ordinance will be issued to restrict the strength of the Supreme Court to 12 from 17, including the Chief Justice. - DDNEW
