US Blackhawk chopper crash kills four

Four Americans were killed and six others injured when a US Blackhawk helicopter crashed in northern Italy, a fire brigade official said. He said all the Americans were members of the US military.

Police have confirmed there were 10 passengers on the helicopter which crashed in the countryside near the city of Treviso, along the bank of the Piave river.

"There are four dead - two bodies have already been extracted (from the wreck) while the other two are still inside," the fire brigade spokesman said.

"It appears the helicopter was a single-rotor Blackhawk with four blades," said a fire brigade official.

"It looks like it went down between the bridge on state (highway) 13 and the bridge on highway A27."

It was not clear whether the helicopter had taken off from the nearby US military base in Aviano.

There were no details on the cause of the crash and a press officer at the US embassy in Rome said she had no information. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
