Variety makes a good party, and Mario Party DS has plenty of it. The Mario Party franchise has always challenged your reflexes through button pressing and +Control Pad movement, but the Touch Screen and built-in microphone add a new level of interactivity to the series.
In its more than 60 mini-games, Mario Party DS mixes up the game styles to keep you on your toes and take full advantage of the unique features of the DS. Here are just a few of the ways Mario Party DS’s mini-games incorporate the Touch Screen and microphone.
Touch Screen mini-games
With stylus in hand, you’ll tap, stroke and circle your way to mini-game domination.
Goomba Wrangler: In this game, players capture wild Goombas (is there any other kind?) by simply circling them with the stylus. Brown Goombas are worth one point whilst golden Goombas net you three. The player with the most points when time runs out wins the battle. Don’t just circle freely. Bob-ombs are mixed amongst the Goombas, and circling a Bob-omb means losing half your points.
Rail Riders: Rail Riders plays a lot like a ski jump. The characters are moving down a slide, and once they get to the bottom of it, they’ll sail through the air. The one who travels the farthest wins the game. You’ll build up speed for the jump by making strokes from the bottom of the Touch Screen to the top.
Hedge Honcho: It’s a race through the shrubbery, and you’ll need to get all the leaves out of your way to get into the clearing. You use the stylus to drag all the leaves you see out of your path. Sometimes you’ll find a ladybug sitting on a leaf. In that case, you’ll need to rub it with the stylus to make it fly away. Be careful not to touch any bees you see. They’ll sting you and slow you down.
Microphone mini-games
Mario Party DS also includes a host of microphone-based mini-games. Although you’re mainly blowing into the microphone, some games will require you to use different techniques.
Big Blowout: You’re racing against your opponents on the tops of candles, and some of them are lit. When you get to a lit candle, you’ll need to blow into the microphone to blow out the candle. The longer and harder you blow, the more nearby candles you’ll blow out.
Short Fuse: It’s not always how hard you blow. Sometimes you can succeed by barely registering a breath. Short Fuse lets players take turns blowing into a bomb fuse, hoping to make the bomb blow up for the next player. The more you blow into the microphone, the faster the fuse burns. You have to blow into the microphone at least a little or the bomb will blow up anyway. -Nintendo
