Gym Class Heroes won one of the 2007 mtvU Woodie Awards. The New York hip-hop band, who had a breakout hit this year with the song "Cupid's Chokehold," took home Woodie of the Year at the college-oriented network's fourth annual award ceremony honoring musicians, as selected by viewers.
Boston rock quartet Boys Like Girls garnered a wood statue for best emerging artist while hip-hop group Madvillain was selected as most original artist. Say Anything, Guster, Spoon, The Academy Is and Muse also got wood at the ceremony, held Thursday at the Roseland Ballroom.
For the first time, mtvU gave a Woodie to an unsigned college act. Duke University's Stella by Starlight beat out over 1,700 college bands to win the first-ever trophy for best music on campus and $5,000 (3,405 EUR).
Winners were selected by 4.6 million votes cast by text and on the network's Web site, according to mtvU.
Performers at the ceremony included Lupe Fiasco, Tokyo Police Club, Spank Rock and Rilo Kiley. The telecast will premiere Nov. 15 on mtvU and mtvU.com
