Stagehands' Braodway strike started this morning causing plays and musicals to shut down as picket lines were formed outside theaters. The stagehands union, Local One, and the League of American Theatres and Producers have been in negotiations for more than three months over staff requirement.
When an agreement failed to be made, Local One gave it’s OK for stagehands to begin the Broadway strike. A spokesperson for the League of American Theatres and Producers said, “It would be shocking if they would hurt that theatergoing public by shutting down Broadway without notice.”
The union has not commented on the strike, but did stop the shows scheduled today. Many workers urged theatre goers to come back after the strike.
Among the shows affected this morning was “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical,” “Wicked,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Rent,” “Les Miserables,” “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” and “Mamma Mia!”
Hollywood writers are also on strike. The Writers Guild of America called a strike after negotiations failed to be made. The strike is affecting many popular shows such as ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Many late night talk shows are also being affected. Many seasons of popular shows will be cut short because of the strike. - TransWorld News
