Sybase iAnywhere and Toyota InfoTechnology Center Co., LTD. today announced the companies have been awarded joint U.S. patents (number 7,228,275 and 7,292,978) on techniques to significantly improve open conversational speech-recognition-based interfaces. The awarded patents are the results of joint research by Sybase iAnywhere and Toyota ITC around speech-enabled natural language in-car interfaces.
The two patents build upon Answers Anywhere™ technology from Sybase iAnywhere, a natural language engine that enables users to interact with mobile, desktop and telematics devices in a natural, free-form and context sensitive manner, substantially increasing usability while reducing training requirements and resulting in higher task completion rates for users. An embedded version of Answers Anywhere is also available for memory constrained platforms.
“Free-form speech-based interfaces will be an essential feature in future car interfaces with hands-free eyes-free interaction requirements,” said Ben Reaves, manager, Toyota ITC. “We find Answers Anywhere to be suitable for such interfaces and have been working with Sybase for years in order to perfect free-form speech-based interfaces.”
“These patents represent technological advances that will give drivers the ability to interact with vehicles in a smarter, safer manner—using their voice, in their own words, to control in-car telematics systems,” said Babak Hodjat, senior director of engineering, Sybase iAnywhere. “This is the result of years of effective, practical joint research between Sybase and Toyota ITC.”-Sybase
