US refusing to hand over 'Chemical Ali'

The US embassy in Baghdad says its forces will not hand over three of Saddam Hussein's top associates for execution until Iraqi authorities have settled their differences over the case.

The three include Ali Hassan al-Majid - also known as Chemical Ali.

They were due to be hanged for genocide almost a month ago but Iraq's President Jalal Talabani has refused to sign the execution order.

Several Iraqi officials are unhappy with the death sentence handed to former defence minister Sultan Hashem.

Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has accused the US embassy of violating the Iraqi Constitution by not handing the men over. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
