Double B Foods Inc. recalls Smoked Sausage Rolls across twelve states due to possible health risks.

Double B Foods, Inc., today announced a twelve-state voluntary recall and market withdrawal of Kolaches (pastry-wrapped sausage) as a safety precaution out of concern that they may contain Listeria. This action is based on a product sample taken from the company.s Meridian, Texas, plant as part of its food-safety monitoring program.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall action.

The products were sold to distributors and retailers operating in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas, who sold the products to consumers through retail grocers, school fundraisers and foodservice distribution outlets. The affected products were produced at the Meridian plant between Oct. 25, 2007, and Nov. 6, 2007, and were sold under the Double B and select private-label brands listed below.

A roster of specific package codes and brand/product descriptions follows. The recall totals approximately 98,000 pounds of product.

This recall does not affect or include ready-to-cook product.

As a result of Double B Foods. aggressive communications with its distributors and retailers, the vast majority of the affected product has already been contained at the distribution center level. The company is working with distributors to capture and contain the remaining product. All of the identified product should be removed from the shelves immediately.

Our food safety testing program revealed the presence of Listeria on sampled ready-to-eat product, and therefore we are issuing this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution,. said Rick Borden, director of human resources and safety. .We.re working with the USDA and our customers to ensure that all products still in the marketplace are retrieved and destroyed as quickly as possible..

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the frail or elderly and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, or taking chemotherapy.

Double B urges consumers who may have eaten the affected product and are experiencing any of the symptoms related to food-borne illness to immediately seek medical attention.

For information on returning recalled product for a full refund or questions regarding this recall, consumers can call the company.s hotline at 254-435-6575. A toll-free hotline will be available beginning early Friday evening at 866-966-4661.
