UN urged to punish sexual war crimes

The head of the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Agency, John Holmes, has urged the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on those who perpetrate or support sexual violence in war.

Mr Holmes says there are cases of sexual violence amounting to deliberate war crimes that should be punished.

He says a new approach is needed to tackle the problem.

"We need to look for new ideas, sanctions, targeted sanctions - we're not talking about economic sanctions particularly, but visas or bank accounts or whatever - that kind of sanctions, might be a weapon worth considering in this particular situation," he said. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
