The Bellingham, Washington-based company announced the street release of "Female Force," a comic series based on prominent women in modern politics, priced at $3.99 retail (USD). Originally announced on Inauguration Day in January, the popular biographical comic about Hillary Clinton quickly sold out, as did the follow-up book on Sarah Palin.
Continued overwhelming amounts of orders from comic-book stores and other selling outlets led Bluewater Productions to order a second printing of the Clinton and Palin issues, as demand quickly exceeded their projected estimates.
Two new issues featuring the life stories of Michelle Obama and Caroline Kennedy will be released in April and June, respectively. All will be manufactured using Bluewater’s green-minded printing philosophy.
Company President and Female Force co-creator Darren G. Davis said the idea sprung from being frustrated with how the women were portrayed in the media, leading to people criticizing them without any true knowledge or solid research about their lives and work.
Writer Neal Bailey penned each title to follow true-life events of influential women in the political spotlight, who have been and will continue to be instrumental in shaping American history. While true to comic book format, the narratives are often in flippant or satirical in tone, but reflect what the company says is "great respect for the intelligent women they chose" for their series.
Bluewater’s business concept hopes to "bridge the gap between comic books and the diverse multimedia marketplace." They carry science fiction, mythical classics and super-hero themed titles, and their best-sellers include VSS, 10th Muse and The Legend of Isis.
In September of 2008, they made headlines in the comic world for creating a partnership with sci-fi icon and best-selling author William Shatner, who collaborated on four graphical titles based on his popular novels The TekWar Chronicles, Quest for Tomorrow, Man O’ War, and a new book Shatner agreed to create for Bluewater alone.
