Breastfeeding reduces risk of heart attack, stroke

Women who breastfed their babies for over a year were 10% less likely to develop heart problems and stroke than women who had never breastfed.

The longer a mother nurses her baby the better for the health of both of them. As well as the benefits for the baby that are usually mentioned in connection with breastfeeding, there is also the fact that breast milk is low in salt. Salt is not good for babies and they need to be protected from salt and salty food.

Protecting babies from salty food and providing low salt meals and snacks for toddlers and older children helps them to avoid becoming overweight/obese and from developing all the illnesses associated with obesity, namely high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, joint pain, depression, etc especially if you also give them a varied diet with plenty of fruit and (unsalted) vegetables. Children are unlikely to enjoy the best of health if they live on crisps, ready meals and highly salted processed foods like takeaways, cornflakes, bread, cheese and brown sauce.

It is also important to avoid talking about dieting in front of children. An early obsession with weight control, avoiding fatty foods and counting calories can lead to an unhappy life wasted by eating disorders, yo-yo dieting and attendant chronic illness.
