The swine flu virus disease in Mexico has killed almost 70 people and has now spread to the United States.

In Mexico schools and museums have been closed and public events cancelled. People have started wearing surgical masks. They are being advised to avoid crowds. Over a thousand cases of human swine flu have been reported and more are expected.

Health officials in New York City are investigating what has caused mild flu-like symptoms in scores of Queens high school students.

There is no guarantee that flu vaccines would help with this new strain of swine flu, a mixture of swine, human and avian viruses. With seasonal flu it is the elderly and the very young who tend to succomb.

The fact that most of the dead in Mexico's swine flu were aged 25 to 45 is taken as a worrying sign.
