This first swine flu death outside of Mexico has been confirmed in Texas and President Obama recommends that schools with confirmed cases of swine flu "strongly consider closing."

There are now confirmed cases of swine flu in New York, California, Kansas, Idaho and Indiana, plus Germany and Spain. And there are further cases in Britain, all of whom, Prime Minister Brown has said, had recently travelled from Mexico, have mild symptoms and are responding to treatment.

The World Health Organization, has confirmed 105 cases of swine flu in seven countries. Confirmed cases of the disease continue to rise in Europe, where the French Health Minister called for suspension of flights from the EU to Mexico, even as swine flu death toll appears to be stabilizing in Mexico.

Cuba and Argentina have both banned flights to Mexico and Americans have been advised to “avoid all non-essential travel to Mexico.” This latest swine flu death, outside of Mexico, will perhaps hasten further bans on flights to Mexico, where Mexico City is imposing severe limitations on large groups of people, including closing schools, gyms and swimming pools.

A declaration from the World Health Organization that the virus cannot be transmitted by eating pork has not stopped ten countries from imposing a ban on the import of pork products. Some cruise lines are stopping all port calls in Mexico. Anxiety is growing, which the swine flu death in Texas will do nothing to allay.
