Low vitamin D levels are associated with metabolic syndrome, which in turn is associated with obesity, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
The researchers are still advising care in the sun as UV damage is linked with skin cancer, but Vitamin D deficiency is becoming such a serious and widespread condition it is important to try to get some sunshine, while taking care not to bake or burn.
Insufficient vitamin D appears to increase the risk of several cancers, including breast and bowel cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, brittle bones, hip fractures and many chronic diseases - including even tooth decay.
