Millions of people take low dose aspirin every day to lower their risk of a heart attack by a fifth, but aspirin increases the risk of stomach bleeding by a third. Scientists at Oxford have concluded that the benefits of aspirin only outweigh the risks in the cases of patients who have already had a stroke or a heart attack.
So it is considered best in general for the 'worried well' not to take daily aspirin as a prophylactic against heart disease or stroke, but this may better be decided on an individual basis in consultation with your doctor.
A completely safe, effective, drug-free way to reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke and a host of other health problems is to cut down on salt and salty food. This has the additional benefits of making you feel a lot better and lowering high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
