
Families can immerse themselves in the many elements of hip-hop at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event Hip-Hop Hooray!, from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, December 1.
Featured events include the performance Hip-Hop Elemental, Part I and II, during which Leah Nelson/Nubia hosts programs featuring talented hip-hop artists from the Twin Cities; a gallery performance by guest MCs Truth Maze and Tiyo Siyolo, who respond to David Hammons’ sculpture with poetic rhythms and beat-box sounds; dance sessions led by Aneka McMullen, Daylight, Dancin’ Dave, and members of Collective and Rhythm Queenz; a scratch and spin workshop led by DJ Stage One featuring turntablism tips from DJ Sy Diggs and Carnage; a presentation of stories with rhythm and rhyme by spoken-word artist Desdemona and father/son duo Jake + P.O.S.; a graffiti-inspired art lab activity led by Roger Cummings of Juxtaposition Arts; a film screening; and a gallery crawl.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.
Hip-Hop Hooray! Saturday, December 1, 10 am–3 pm
Families take a hands-on approach to learning the many elements of hip-hop—turntablism, aerosol art, MC’ing, B-boying/B-girling—while discovering the community oriented roots of this cultural movement. Teaching-artist, choreographer, and dancer Leah Nelson/Nubia guest-curated this all-star lineup of events.
Gallery Crawl: Flight Fantasy by David Hammons, 10 am–2 pm
Learn about ways that David Hammons salvages materials from the street to make art.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Aerosol Attack, 10 am–3 pm
Kids enjoy a graffiti-inspired activity led by Roger Cummings of Juxtaposition Arts.
Films: Hip-Hop Flix, 10 am–3 pm
Watch innovators of hip-hop dance and aerosol art in this looped film program.
Gallery Performance: Call & Response, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm
