Saudi Arabia announced today that it has arrested 208 people with suspected ties to Al Qaeda over the last several months, with suspects belonging to as many as six different terrorist cells.
The report comes from the New York Times which says those arrested had planned attacks on oil facilities and assassinations of clerics and security forces.
At least 22 were allegedly planning assassinations while 112 were part of a cells working to recruit Saudis to participate in insurgent attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The paper also reports that at least one cell had plans to attack an auxiliary oil facility and another planned to smuggle missiles into the country. Terror network financers were also arrested, accused of funneling money into groups like Al Qaeda.
The Saudi Government will put those arrested through a re-education program, says the Times, hoping to convince them that such terrorist networks are against Islam. Last week the government released 1,500 prisoners after being persuaded to switch loyalties.
